After six years of tireless efforts, I finally won my first demo derby during the '97 August long weekend.
I was fortunate enough to land in a heat with cars similar to my own-- no wagons or mid-sixties land yachts. When the flag dropped I stayed away from the corners and didn't let anyone get a good run at me. As usual, the Caprice's trunk folded up like a cheap suit and the frame behind the rear wheels was left plowing the dirt. But did this stop me? Not a chance. The front end of my Chevy was exceptionally strong, enabling me to hit anyone I chose with minimal damage. The engine ran perfectly, stalling only twice, and then firing right back up. In the end, my car kept running longer than anyone else's. Perhaps my preparation finally paid dividends.
