For 1999 the only car I could come up with was a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. The car happened to be painted solid black just like Knight Rider, and even included the cowl-induction hood.
I thought I would try to make the car look like KITT so I designed a home-made light bar for the nose. Unfortunately, part of the deal when I bought the car was that the owner wanted back the above-mentioned hood, which he said he would swap out and give me the one from his current car. Of course, he never got around to giving me back his old hood so I had to race with an open engine compartment. This bothered me mainly because the KITT lights didn't stand out nearly as well without a hood to frame them. Oh well, lesson learned.
Less than 20 cars showed up for this year's event and mine was definitely the smallest. I was a little bit worried driving into the ring, but the car held up amazingly well (even though I seemed to be the favourite target of a certain Mr. Noonan!) and it didn't stall once.
While I didn't win my heat, at least I wasn't the first car out, and I had lots of fun duking it out with the big cars. Plus, I managed to win Best Looking Car again, even without the hood.
