After competing in demolition derbies for most of the 1990s, I've picked up quite a few tips on the preparation of a derby car. It finally paid off in 1997 with my first trip to victory lane.

Entering a car involves more than just smashing out the windows and painting a number on the door. As in most things in life, God is in the details. Many a good car, a couple of mine included, has retired early due to some minor glitch that was overlooked while preparing the car. The following is a beginner's guide to entering a demolition derby.

Preparing the Driveline: Get your motor and tranny in tip-top shape

Preparing the Body: Make your car stand up to the punishment

What to bring: A list of essential items and spares to bring to the race

Bad Ideas: A list of what not to do, although some people like to do it anyways.
